MUSIC VIDEO TEXTUAL ANALYSIS
GENRE:
| What
is the Genre of the Video? |
Pop Rock |
| What
is the genre of the Artist? |
Pop |
| Is
there a typical narrative? |
Yes, the narrative is based on the fact that someone wished they had more time. |
| What
is expected in the video? |
I would expect to see some sort of time difference between events or in fact events in which would be changed with time. |
| What
is unexpected in the video? |
The fact that there isn't much of the scenes in which I expected to see. |
| Intertextual
References? (Video link to other music videos?) |
I couldn't see any intertextual references to other music videos in this piece. |
NARRATIVE:
| What
is the storyline of the video? |
The storyline is basically a person who wished he had more time to do things. |
| Is
there a theme? |
The theme seems to be bright colours in this music video as its mainly performance shots of the artists and not much narrative at all, however and wide variety of colours used. |
| Is
there a recognisable structure (TODOROV – Equilibrium 5 stages)? |
it is hard to identify the stages as this music video has a very subtle narrative in which is hard to understand without research, however, I believe that there is a disruption of the equilibrium and then an attempt to repair it throughout the song. |
| Are
there recognisable characters? |
The band members could be seen as some sort of hero in this story however, it is hard to determine who is who as the narrative is subtle. |
| How
does the video reflect the lyrics? |
The video is far different from the lyrics as the video is full of bright colours which connote happiness, however the lyrics themselves portray sadness and has a dark theme about them. Therefore the music video doesn't really reflect the meaning of the lyrics at all. |
REPRESENTATION:
| What
issues of representation are evident? |
The main representation in this clip is the colours that are use and what they represent in the music video. The song is about time and how much you have, however this creates a far different atmosphere as apposed to the bright colours. The bright colours connote happiness and this may therefore represent the happiness within the narrative. |
| How
have these been represented? Stereotypes? |
This is not stereotypical in most ways within this music video as the lyrics represent sadness however, the bright colours connote happiness which are clear opposites. |
| Look
at the artist as a star – how have they been constructed? |
They haven't been constructed to look like stars in this music video, they almost look more like the average person singing a song. |
| Do
they have an anonymous role in the video or are they there as
celebrity? |
They seem to be there as a celebrity however, some of the band members don't get much prevalence, therefore they could be seen to be there as an anonymous character. |
VISUAL CODES:
| Where
is the video set? Connotations of this setting? |
I video seems to be set in a black area, could be a warehouse. This is shown by the constant black area that is present and the fact that most of the music video seems to be dark. this could connote death or sadness. |
| Dominant
colour used in the video? Why? What is the effect? |
The dominant colour is black however, there are other main bright colours. this may be used to link with the narrative of the video and has the effect of portraying these emotions. |
| Written
Iconographics? Typography? Why? |
I cant see any iconographics or typography in this music video as it is very bland and simple. |
| Shot
Compositions that stand out? |
There are mainly just performance shots in this music video as there is hardly any narrative that is shown throughout the music video. |
TECHNICAL CODES:
| Camera
Angles? Interesting ones? What effect is created? |
The interesting shots are mainly close ups as they show the emotion in the artists faces. They are interesting as it shows the emotion in which they feel so they can portray the narrative. The effect that is created basically have an impact of the audiences as they may feel the same when watching the music vi deo. |
| Does
the way the camera moves help to tell the story? |
No, the camera does not move to help the story as the whole music video is filmed in within a dark area only showing performance shots of the band/artists. |
| What
is editing like? Type of cuts etc? |
The cuts and fast and continuous. The whole music video has a lot of fast paced editing and cuts to help the video run smoothly. |
AUDIENCE:
| Who
is the target audience for the video? How does the video target this specific audience? |
The target audience is Teenagers as the bright colours will appeal to them more and be more relevant to them. This video targets this audience by using these bright colours and catchy lyrics in which appeal to the audience. |
| Demographic? |
E,D |
This has helped me understand more into my chosen genre and artist and therefore I can use this when coming to make my own music video.
