digipak analysis 1

The front cover is very contradictory of the album title born to die. Within the mise en scene of the main image, there are bright colours and a high contrast, which gives the image a fake effect. this can be could be used to hide the sinister meaning of the album. the baby blue connotes innocence however, despite her facial expression implies otherwise. her facial expressions are very emotionless and the low angle shot may suggest that she has some form of power and dominance. although, despite this she still looks classical. this could connote that she is fine on the outside. this gives the audience a sense of her musically as well as what this entire album may be about; heartbreak, putting on a brave face maybe.

The CD itself is plain white with red roses on it. The white background is associated with innocence, purity and goodness. However, the redness in the roses brings out a direct contrast against the innocent representation. Connoting power, passion, love. The contrast of these colours gives mixed messages about the album which therefore could give a distorted narrative idea.

The back cover reinforces the lyrics and narrative of the album which connotes heartbreak. The colour scheme red, black and white creates a negative and simplistic atmosphere. Many people associate red with danger or blood. The text is in black and white which compliment the red background making the text stand out. The language within the typography is very negative and intense again trying to get across the meaningful narrative.

This has helped me analysis a digipak and understand how they are constructed to give different meanings in which I will use when coming to make my own.
