Katy Perry Roar - music video analyse based on goodwins theory

MUSIC VIDEO TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

GENRE:

What is the Genre of the Video?  Pop
What is the genre of the Artist?  Pop
Is there a typical narrative?  The narrative of this music video is almost a story of how a young woman survives a plane crash and survives in a forest/jungle with animals. There is some slight humour seen within this video as the start is a cartoon.
What is expected in the video?  Within the music video I expect to see some sort of exploration of this jungle and how it will unfold form there.
What is unexpected in the video?  Unexpectedly, Katy Perry makes contact and becomes, what you could call, friends with the animals and then makes a life out of it.
Intertextual References?  (Video link to other music videos?) The lyrics Eye of the Tiger are referred to within the music video. These lyrics link to Survivor's music video for Eye of the Tiger, therefore creating an intertexual reference between them.

NARRATIVE:

What is the storyline of the video?  The storyline of the video is a plane crashes into a jungle and a young woman becomes what looks to be queen of the jungle.
Is there a theme?  The theme looks to be animals as they are the basis of the music video.
Is there a recognisable structure (TODOROV – Equilibrium 5 stages)?  There is a clear disruption of the equilibrium at the start as the plane crashes however, throughout the video the equilibrium  seems to come back as normal towards the middle of the video.
Are there recognisable characters?  There seems to be a fake hero and a hero which the main female actor could be seen as later on in the music video.
How does the video reflect the lyrics?  the video reflects the chorus more so than the verses as when the lyric 'roar' is said, the main female character is wearing lion patterned clothing giving it a clear reflection to the lyrics.

REPRESENTATION:

What issues of representation are evident?  issues such as the representation of the female character are hard to understand what she is represented as. it is very unclear however, as it gets towards to end we can sort of understand that she may be the queen of the jungle.

How have these been represented? Stereotypes? Men are stereotypically dominant over women therefore this video is non-stereotypical as a female character has the dominance.

Look at the artist as a star – how have they been constructed?  They have been constructed to seem in control of the situation and have a understanding of what is happening within the video. The mise-en-scene within the video also describes this.

Do they have an anonymous role in the  video or are they there as celebrity? They are seen in the video as a cele
brity

VISUAL CODES:

Where is the video set? Connotations of this setting?  This video seems to be set in a jungle. the connotations of this setting are quietness, peace which does not inline with the music video or lyrics.
Dominant colour used in the video? Why? What is the effect?  the dominant colour is green. This is because of where it is based the natural dominant colour is green. This has effect on the setting and adds more value to scene.

Written Iconographics? Typography? Why?  I am unable to find any iconography within this music video.

Shot Compositions that stand out?  mainly there are close ups of the facial expressions on the female character showing the emotion within music video and what they are experiencing.

TECHNICAL CODES:

Camera Angles? Interesting ones? What effect is created?  At the very start there is a high angle and long shot of the scene which sets the scene and allows the audience to understand what has happened which make
s this an interesting shot.
Does the way the camera moves help to tell the story?  The camera almost moves with the story enabling the audience to understand what is happening and where it is happening.
What is editing like? Type of cuts etc?  The editing is fast and slow paced throughout the music video. To start with the music video is slow paced and then when the chorus comes fast paced editing is used to go with the song.

AUDIENCE:

Who is the target audience for the video?

How does the video target this specific audience?
the target audience are young adults/teenagers.

The video is targeted at a younger audience as it is set as a fantasy island almost in which a young woman is on.

Demographic?  I think the demographic is young adults/teenagers therefore D, E

INSTITUTION:

What role does the record company play in the music video?  The record company plays a role in the music video by allowing the content to take place meaning that the video can attract its intended audience.
What is the brand image of the star that is sold?
How is the star marketed and promoted?
The brand image is like a celebrity as this is what the start is seen as in the music video.

The star is promoted and marketing by showing off specific things within the music video such as clothing, causing trends when placed in the marketing campaign.

This has helped me apply Goodwin's theory to a music video and then analyse it. This will help me when coming to make my own music video as I can apply Goodwin's theory to it.
